The importance of CDP

With the growing focus on environmental responsibility, publication of ESG reports (environmental, social and governance) and the response to questionnaires for technical evaluation are gaining prominence in the global corporate scenario. Large companies are already demonstrating their commitment by disclosing sustainable actions and this trend of standardization is also reaching Europe, where around 50.000 companies will need to follow new sustainability standards starting this year.

One of the main instruments used for this assessment is the CDP, an internationally recognized platform that measures the progress of organizations in managing their environmental impact. Companies voluntarily adopt the system, which provides a annual score, which goes from A to F to classify the company, based on metrics aligned with the recommendations of Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), with the assessment increasingly focused on the objectives of limiting global warming to 1,5ºC. This tool helps investors and stakeholders to assess risks and opportunities related to climate change, promoting more conscious management.

“The benefits of participating in the CDP go beyond international recognition. Companies that respond to the report strengthen their reputation, having a greater chance of attracting green investments by gaining greater market trust in their ESG management. It also allows them to identify opportunities for cost savings, manage risks more efficiently and drive innovation,” highlights Edson Ferreira, director of Ferso.

To maintain its relevance, the CDP has been improving its structure, with new features being implemented in 2024. These include a unified questionnaire that simplifies the response process, greater attention to small and medium-sized companies, and a focus on collecting data on biodiversity and ecosystems. “These changes aim to facilitate participation, increase the impact of actions and strengthen environmental responsibility in the supply chain,” explains the director.

The improvements facilitate understanding of organizations' environmental performance, enabling more assertive decision-making by investors, regulators and other interested parties.
