It is estimated that there are around 3 thousand landfills in Brazil, a reality that must be prioritized in basic sanitation policies.

Considering the advanced technologies available, landfills emerge as the most suitable option for waste disposal. These complex engineering works, subject to strict approval by environmental agencies, provide safe disposal of waste. Furthermore, they allow the capture of methane gas, contributing to more sustainable energy sources.

Although federal laws and environmental policies establish rights and obligations for waste management, some bills present worrying contradictions. Senate Bill No. 412/2022, for example, seeks to regulate carbon credits, but its approach could burden sectors that significantly contribute to reducing emissions, such as landfills.

Tax reform and risks

Initial Tax Reform proposals raised concerns about increasing the tax burden for the waste sector, which could negatively impact proper management and encourage a return to landfills.

Future perspectives and challenges

With the support of the Federal Senate, which indicates a different approach to the waste sector, the debate is expected to deepen in the next stages of the process. Recognizing the environmental and social contribution of landfills is crucial to avoid unfair penalties.
